MANNAM: Step by step for peace 2 ( MIYC Pledge of Peace 10KM )

MANNAM: Step by step for peace 2 ( MIYC Pledge of Peace 10KM )

10km walk event was held every year in the name of peace. This year, the ambience of the event was a little different. It differed in scale and size because the purpose was different. The difference can be divided into five parts.

Third, there were lots of booths that you could enjoy, and many stuff to help you remember. Because this year’s event was from all MANNAM in Korea and especially the headquarters of MANNAM helped a lot. For example, MANNAM K-POP team showed us performances on that day. Also, before the 10Km walk started, the K-POP team showed us some exercise movements to follow for warm up. Hand made badges came handy too. There was a booth were you can print your finger print on a badge. It was unique, and a good item for reminding this event.

< Making badges with fingerprints >

MIYC T-shirts was also interest to the people. 5 colors of shirts which were written MIYC was all over the park that day so, every body who came there noticed about our program. It was sold out before the walk, so other who couldn’t buy them didn’t have a choice about the matter.

Fourth, the place where the event was held was suitable for everyone. Not only the youth but also the young and old enjoyed it. In Seoul Grand Park, there was a zoo, amusement park and lots of things to see and enjoy. Especially the cherry blossoms bloomed beautifully so the sight was lovely.

< Cherry blossoms in Seoul Grand Park >

Last but not least, 10Km walk and MIYC was hot in media. If last year’s 10Km was only limited in Korea media, this year many countries got interest in this event. Since the event was with many other foreign associations, this was possible. Not only on this day, but also by MIYC effect caused in other countries too. India, Philippines and other countries broadcast about this peace walk in Korea.

Peace is possible if I am working for it. We can not make something big all by me. We have to face the reality and must work together for peace. If we do this, peace will come any sooner now.
Don’t you want to do something meaningful when you have the chance to do it? Don’t hesitate. Just come to MANNAM. I know that we can make you significant and a person who matters. With your help it is possible!

MANNAM: Step by step for peace 1 ( MIYC Pledge of Peace 10K )

MANNAM: Step by step for peace 1 ( MIYC Pledge of Peace 10K )

What do you do for peace? How hard are you working for peace? Are you a person who acts what he or she thinks? In MANNAM what you think of peace is coming real. In MANNAM we show acts for everything we think that is right. For world peace, MANNAM got together in Seoul Grand Park this year. It was a big 10km walking event for peace.

10km walk event was held every year in the name of peace. This year, the ambience of the event was a little different. It differed in scale and size because the purpose was different. The difference can be divided into five parts.

First, the scale was larger than before. 10Km event is held every once a year. Like last year, over 10 MANNAM branches throughout the country held 10Km event in their own branches. But this year was different. Every branch in Korea, MANNAM gathered for this event. So, thousands of people came together in one place for peace.

Second, the purpose became larger and more serious.
Many counties suffered because of all the disasters that happened all around the world. Haiti, Turkey, Pakistan, Japan, Chile had earthquakes and typhoon in their countries. When the disaster happened, it was broadcasted throughout the whole world. Many people was shocked and alerted by the news. What about now? Still in some places the people who meet the misfortune suffer even now. But the people from other countries forgot about this fact because it is not my problem. To remember and helping by sending the video was the main purpose for last year’s 10Km. By walking the 10Km, we thought, and remembered what happened in other side of the world. Actually last year, we made a video about this event and send it to the counties. Turkey was so pleased and glad about this, they broadcasted in their national broadcast channel.
This year, the peace walk was with many youth organization in Korea. The youth came together for peace. The leaders of the organizations took a pledge for peace. In this event, we announced that we don’t want war anymore in this world. 13 countries were chosen to represent for all countries suffering the consequences of wars and internal conflicts. (Nepal, Bangladesh, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, India, Philippines, China, Malawi, Uganda, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, South Korea) So, the people in this year walked for peace, no war.

MANNAM Victory Cup: We become one in Soccer!

MANNAM Victory Cup: We become one in Soccer!

MANNAM Victory was held in Gangwon area so all the players from Gangwon gathered for the soccer match. Several MANNAM teams got together. Some teams are from the same country like, Vietnamese, and China. But some teams were made from the players all around the world. Even though, the language, culture, races were different, they became one by soccer. The love of soccer maybe is the same for all the players.
Because English is common in soccer, many words come from English. Like as, Goalkeeper, Goal, attack etc. But still some words can be translated in Korean.

 Attack(er): 공격()
 Defence(r): 수비()
 경고: yellow card
 퇴장: red card

Do you know more words in your language? We can change some words in other languages but most of them will be English because soccer started in England. Like the English is used in all around the world, hope MANNAM Victory cup can become huge for all the soccer lovers around the world. Winning is important, but what MANNAM thinks is that becoming one for peace is more to us. Because with this thought, everyone wins no matter what the score is!

[MANNAM] It's alive! 살아있네(sal-a-it-nae)~

[MANNAM] It's alive! 살아있네(sal-a-it-nae)~

Have you ever heard about this?
살아있네 살아있어 솨솨솨솨(sal-a-it-nae sal-a-it-eo swa-swa-swa-swa)
You can easily hear this buzz word everywhere.
It was originally the line from movie.
Then this line became popular from an entertainment program and spread to all of Korea.

This is a video about 살아있네 살아있어 솨솨솨솨(sal-a-it-nae sal-a-it-eo swa-swa-swa-swa)
Watch how they say this. there is a special rhythm for this:)

http://www.inven.co.kr/board/powerbbs.php?come_idx=2716&l=595989

Then what is this mean and when can we use it?
First, 살아있다(sal-a-it-da) means 'Alive'
살아있네(sal-a-it-nae) is a exclamation form of 살아있다(sal-a-it-da) and also, 살아있어(sal-a-it-eo) is a conversation form of 살아있다(sal-a-it-da).
So, this full sentence means 'It's alive!'
This phrase is used when something is active and good.

Not only physical but also the mind too.
If something is dead, it can't be done well.
Just like an object. For example, when phone is out of battery or not working we say phone is dead.

Then why is this word so popular among people?)
Koreans like something that's alive.
As you see in the sushi restaurant, Koreans prefer to have raw fish that's alive.

In addition, When person's mind is alive, they think more and get good results.
This is why Korean's like which is alive.
So, from now on, use this word whenever you see something is good like it's alive!

Lastly, then how can we be alive?
I have thought about this a lot of times.
All the people looks same on the outside, but among them, how can I be the person who really looks like, and live like it's alive?
I have solved this question through joining MANNAM.
By joining MANNAM, and doing volunteering works, I feel I am alive.
Why? Because I am alive, I can help others and through these works.
Therefore, I feel I am living in the world with others.
I think spending valuable time and make meaningful memories with others are one of the ways to be alive.
So, join MANNAM International Volunteer Association and ‘be alive’! 살아있네 살아있어(sal-a-it-nae sal-a-it-eo)
There is only one life for each of us! Don't you want to live like alive person?
Make yourself valuable and also helpful to others.

You can this situation of 인산인해(in-san-in-hae) on festivals or holidays.
However, not only for those kinds of fun things, what if lots of people gather to do volunteer work?

If lots of people gather and work for world peace, what can't be impossible?
If we gather and share lights in us, that will be the one what we can make peace with.
By sharing lights, cultures, we can understand each other, then, there will be no reason to fight each other.

[MANNAM] North & South Korea, different language, same hope

[MANNAM] North & South Korea, different language, same hope

You know North and South Korea have same nationality.
Even now there is a line between us, we have same language, culture and ancestors.
However, since the Korean war, it has been already more than 60 years.
During that time, because of our different political system, we had different life styles.
As you experience in South Korea, it's more opened to other countries so that, here, there are not only pure Korean culture but also there are other various cultures coexisting.
On the other hand, because North Korea was not very opened to other countries, they still keep their own Korean culture.
With this different life styles, now, there are differences in North and South Korea.
Especially, today, I will introduce difference in languages.

In South Korea, people just use English word doughnut when we see a bread that has a hole in the meddle.
However, in North Korea, they call it 가락지빵(ga-rak-ji-bbang) which means ring bread.
가락지(ga-rak-ji) is a old word for ring and (bbang) means bread.

The Korean famous noodle 라면(ra-myeon) is also in North Korea too.
However, they call it 꼬부랑 국수(ggo-bu-rang guk-su).
꼬부랑(ggo-bu-rang) is usually used to describe grandmothers who has bent back.
But as 라면(ra-myeon) has curl, they also call 라면(ra-myeon), 꼬부랑 국수(ggo-bu-rang guk-su)

Last, let's see how North Korean people call the Konglish word hand phone, 핸드폰(hand phone) in pure Korean.
They call it 손전화(son-jeon-hwa). (son) is hand and 전화(jeon-hwa) is phone.
A telephone that you can carry with your hand.

Like this, if South Korea use lots of word that has Chinese meanings and English word, North Korea use pure Korean words.
However, even we have difference in our language and cultures, our hope is not different.
Our hope is reunification and live peacefully with our separated family.
But it takes long time to do this if only Korea tries it.
We need your help to make peace in us.
It's not only Korean's problem, when Korea reunificate, the world is one step forward to peace.
So let's work together in MANNAM to get close to world peace.
Help us that there are no more differences in North and south Korea so that we can still communicate we families meet together.

# North & South Korean Vocabulary

MANNAM is a mountain 만남은 산과 같다(MANNAM-eun san-gwa got-da)

MANNAM is a mountain 만남은 산과 같다(MANNAM-eun san-gwa got-da)

On 6th of April, we went to the mountain for volunteer work.
As I mentioned on last article, because 5th of April was a tree planting day, we went there to plant and also to clean the mountain.
On that day, way to go up there, the view was awesome.
Although flowers weren't blossomed yet, lots of trees and some waterfalls were beautiful.
While I was on the mountain, I felt that MANNAM is like an mountain!
It's not just a whimsy thinking. Here are the reasons why I felt this way.

There are lots of different kinds of trees on the mountain.
As a one itself, it is just a tree. However, together, they make one big mountain.
Even though they are different, they stay together, and become strong that no one could remove them.
Whenever tsunami comes, they keep their position and withstand it.
When you see under the ground, you can see their roots are grabbing each other.
This is how trees stay together and survive the danger.

How about us? MANNAM International members?
We are all from different countries. We speak different languages, nationalities and religions.
However, in MANNAM, we stay together and make strong possibilities of world peace.
Others might think we are just a group of people, but inside, we work together and by sharing each light, cultures we can have the material for the world peace.
This is how we overcome the difference between us and achieve peace in the world.

So now, does MANNAM International looks like one big mountain?
I can see a MANNAM mountain with various colors shinning with the light.
However, we need more trees, the light to save the Earth from the war.
We need you to twinkle with us so that we can achieve the world peace with stronger light.
One light can be dark, but if we stand together, it will be bright enough to light up the world.

MANNAM can make PEACE in North Korea 북한(buk-han) and South Korea 남한(anm-han)

MANNAM can make PEACE in North Korea 북한(buk-han) and South Korea 남한(anm-han)

When you turn on the TV, the news about North Korea is the most thing you can see these days.
Also, not only on TV, people’s topic on lots of social media is about war between two Koreas.
When people talk about this, I feel sad more than fear. As you know, North Korea and South Korea is a family.
We speak same language, we share same culture, we have same history and so on.
What do you need more to prove? There are many people who’s family is in North Korea.
Even they are family, because of the 38th parallel, they can’t meet each other.
Separating family is the most cruel thing to do. What if it was you, who are on that situation?
The whole life will be spent missing them and hoping to meet them.
There used to be a meeting for long-lost families.
However, as the relation between North and South Korea got unsteady, the meeting for them has canceled.
Even though they can’t live together, their last hope to seeing each other in their life has gone.
Because it has been about 63 years since the war has broken out, most of the members of separated members are old.
They can’t wait 5 or 10 years to see them.
But the problem is, now, if the war breaks out, we should face each other to fight.
Please help us not to fight as a family.
I know it is not a proud thing to be on the news as this problem, but we need your help.
It’s not all of us who wants to fight. It’s some of the men’s bad ambition.
When the war breaks out, not only Korea will got harmed but also, the soldiers who are sent to Korea to help us will also get harmed.
I don’t, neither you don’t want this tragic to be happened in this world, right?
Through MANNAM, please shout WORLD PEACE with us and let’s stop this bad situation.
Will you help us? Only few of us can’t stop this, but if we gather our hope, I know we will achieve it.
All the people who are living on the world want WORLD PEACE, right?
Weather you are living in North, South, East, and West, we are all living in the same planet and we are one of the biggest family.
Let’s do not make loud voice between families.

In Korean, Korea is called ‘한국(han-guk)’.
But as we are separated in North and South Korea, we are called 북한(buk-han) North Korea and 남한(nam-han) South Korea.
Korea have three side of seas on each side.
One is East sea 동해(dong-hae), and another is West sea 서해(seo-hae), the other is South sea 남해(nam-hae).
((hae) is a word which has Chinese meaning of sea)

MANNAM! Let's grab our hands together!!

MANNAM! Let's grab our hands together!!

Time for learning Korean idiom is back!!
Today's idiom is '손을 잡다(son-eul jap-da) '.
손(son) is hand and 잡다(jap-da) means to grab.
However, 손을 잡다(son-eul jap-da) is not only about grabbing hands.
It has hidden meaning included in there. Which is 'To units minds and cooperate together'
Can you think of MANNAM logo? It looks like the Taegeuk pattern in Korean flag and there are two hands grabbing each other.
When we meet, most of countries shack hands as greeting.
Also in another situation, when contract has concluded, two representatives shack hands.
However, in this situation, shaking hands doesn't mean greeting.
It means from now on, let's cooperate and do well, right?
Same as this, when we grab others hands, it could be the meaning of greeting but also, it can be the hands gathering power.
When one person stands alone and tries to do something, it could be hard to achieve its goal.
However, when many people, who are looking for same goal, grab hands together, then the power to achieve the goal will be stronger.

In MANNAM International, because we look for same thing, which is world peace, and work together, we can achieve this goal through us.
Each hand that we grab in MANNAM is the one that will never break up.
It will bring more power and possibilities to achieve peace.
If you are hoping for the same goal with us, grab our hand and let's achieve it together.
When all the people in the world grab hand in hand, that is the time that peace has achieved.
Who will fight if we grab hands together?
We are stretching our hands to the world through volunteering works.
Why don' you join us and hold out your hands to the world?
Grabbing your hand can be the way to make world peace.

# Korean Idiom

[MANNAM] It's a spring now!!!

[MANNAM] It's a spring now!!!

봄 봄 봄 봄 봄이 왔어요~(Bom bom bom bom bom-yiwat-eo-yo) Spring has come!

What comes into your mind when you think about spring?

It reminds me of a new start, warm aura, and growing up and etc.

in spring, because of lots of flowers, the image of spring is very bright.

However, a few days ago, I heard in the radio that, because most of the atmosphere is bright, on the other side, there are more people who are depressed deeply.

When the room is dark, we can flatter that every side of the room is bright.

However, as the room is bright, the dark side is darker than it used to be.

Same as this, we might feel spring is the season that everyone can start new thing and grow up but there are excluded people we forgot about.

They could be people who are harmed from the war and disaster or natural environment.

Living in the same planet means we care each other, right?

Let's share our warm and hopeful energy with those people.

So that not only a one side but all the side of the earth can be bright.

The material for this is your LIGHT!

Like the slogan of MANNAM, When Light meets Light there is Victory.

Share your light, your culture. By sharing, we can make world brighter than ever.

MANNAM International Volunteers share their own lights through volunteering hoping for world peace.

Don't you want this spring to be the happiest for EVERYONE?

If you do, join us:)

[MANNAM] Do you know the meaning of the word ‘Face’ 얼굴(eol-geul)

[MANNAM] Do you know the meaning of the word ‘Face’ 얼굴(eol-geul)

The word ‘얼굴(eol-geul)’ means ‘Face’ in Korean.
But, do you know the hidden meaning in this word?
First, ‘(geul)’ means cave and cave puts something inside.
Next, ‘(eol)’ has the meaning of spirit and mind.
So, all together, ‘얼굴(eol-geul)’ means a cave that puts one’s spirit.
Isn’t it cool? When we hear about ‘얼굴(eol-geul)’, we think about a round thing that has eyes, nose, mouse and ears in it.
However, that’s not is. ‘얼굴(eol-geul)’ also puts one’s mind.
Specifically, this is an example.
When you see a man fighting, you can see a anger through his face.
On the contrary, when you see kids playing together, you can see and also feel the happiness and peace through their face.
By just looking at someone’s face, you can see their spirit and mind.
But, not only for others, others also can see your mind through your face too.
Smiling might looks like just happy, but it means the person is having positive spirit.
Same as others’ too.
As a result, remember that your face is a cave of your sprit.
It can spread peaceful energy more effectively than by saying many words.
However, it’s not easy to control your mind, right?
Then, why don’t you do thing that can change your face, the spirit?
In my experience, whenever I do volunteer works, I feel like my spirit and mind get cured.
During that time and also even back from that time, I feel like I am full of happy energy.
It’s like healing my spirit.
So, on this weekend, how about joining MANNAM International and heal your spirit?
Don’t you want your ‘얼굴(eol-geul)’ to be looked beautifully??

MANNAM International! Let’s plant PEACE seed in the world!

MANNAM International! Let’s plant PEACE seed in the world!

Learning Korean proverb time is back!!
Today’s proverb is ‘콩 심은 데 콩 나고 팥 심은 데 팥 난다(cong sim-eun dae cong na-go pat sim-eun dae pat nan-da)’. It is similar to English proverb  ‘An onion will not produce a rose or As one sows, so shall he reap’.
It means all brings certain results along its root.
It is an easy proverb that you don’t really have to think.
It is a natural situation to get what you plant.
No one expects something different than what they have plant.
It is an impossible thing except in the fairy tale.
However, when people face situation like this proverb, some people don’t understand it.
When people claim only their own opinion, they can’t negotiate, and it will cause argue.
On the contrary, when people try to understand each other and care others, it will make peace.
This is a situation of is ‘콩 심은 데 콩 나고 팥 심은 데 팥 난다(cong sim-eun dae cong na-go pat sim-eun dae pat nan-da)’.
We cannot expect peace being selfish. That is a greed.
If people really want peace in the world, we should work for it so that we can achieve world peace.
How? How about start from volunteering with MANNAM International?
We gather and volunteer to plant seed of peace in the world.

Why MANNAM International runs Korean class for free?

Why MANNAM International runs Korean class for free?

This might be the one of the most curious questions for all of you who know MANNAM.
Why do they run free Korean class?
Its because we are volunteer group! We are just sharing the ability that we have. Ability doesnt run down because we use it. It will improve rather than decrease.

Is it too obvious? You want something else, right?
Then, I will start from MANNAMs history.

You know how MANNAM started and you know where Gangnam is. Nowadays in South Korea, Gangnam is known as rich town. Before Gangnam was famous for that, people who were not rich were living there.
However, because of the plan to make richest town, Gangnam, there, the people who were living there had been kicked out from there. It makes two antithetic groups to live next to each other. At this point, MANNAMs chair woman Nam Hee Kim saw this and thought she should help them. She saw the people disregarded because of mammonism. This is how she started to volunteer. As this volunteer going on, many people gather to join this. Also, Gangnam mayor saw this and he promised to help MANNAM. Moreover, MANNAMs honorary chairman Man Hee Lee heard this and he also start started to join MANNAM. With these peoples help, MANNAM could hold 54th Memorial day events. On this day, MANNAMs honorary chairman saw many foreigners joining this event and thought it will be good to work with foreigners too. So, from then, MANNAM made MANNAM International.
This is how MANNAM International has started.

Then, how about MANNAM International Korean class?
Man Hee Lee was a soldier at the Korean war. At the war, there werent just Koreans, there were also soldiers from other countries fighting for us. He was so thankful for them offering their life to fight for us. After that, at the mud festival in Boryeong, he saw many foreigners in Korea. He said those young men must have hard time living in Korea. Also, those young men are whom had fight for us long time ago. So, this is why he recommended about Korean class to help those who have language difficulties.

Not only Korean class, but also all the other MANNAM activities are from those mind set of sacrifice. Not selfishness but considerable thinking.

Also, for my case, when I was young, I have experience living in another country. Maybe, only the one who has experience will know how it feels like. Start from the difficulties in language, all of the little things were hard and stressful. In addition, being alone is the hardest thing that makes me tired. Because I know how hard it is to live in another country, I want to help others who are having hard time with this. At that time, my friend introduced me MANNAM and I started to join MANNAM and volunteer in MANNAM International Korean class. Even I might not be professional like other academies, I am trying my best to help others.
I hope, this MANNAM International spread to the world and make world peace through MANNAM.
