MANNAM! This & That? 이거 & 그거 & 저거?

We usually use word ‘this & that’ instead of saying all the objects.

Same as Korean. However, Koreans use three different pointing words.

If you know them, it will help you to understand more than before.

*In this case, let’s say there are least two people speaking

#이(i) N = This N (Object is nearby the speaker)

#그(geu) N = That N(Object is nearby the listener)

#저(jeo) N = That N(Object is far from both speaker and listener)

#것/거(geot,geo) = Thing / 사람(saram) = Person / 곳(got) = Place

*You add 이/그/저+Noun to point something

Ex) 이 곳은 만남이에요 : This place is MANNAM

Ex) 그 것은 우리거예요 : That is our’s

Ex) 저 사람은 우리 친구예요 : That person is our friend

Since summer is around the corner, the weather is getting warmer and warmer. The flowers, trees and all the natures make picturesque scene. Looking at those make me say

Then what is the word beautiful in Korean? Also, what is to be beautiful?

아름답다(a-reum-dab-ta) is an adjective which means ‘beautiful’.

The old word of 아름답다(a-reum-dab-ta) is 알움(al-um).

When we examine the word 알움(al-um) detailly, it is the combined letter of 알(al) and 움(um).

The first letter 알(al) is same as the word ‘아’ and ‘아리’, all of them means ‘the sun’

The second letter 움(um) refers ‘state of sprouting out.’

All together 알움(al-um) refers ‘sprouting out the seed that is naturally within me.’

Therefore, 아름답다(a-reum-dab-ta) connotes the meaning that to be beautiful is sprouting out what is naturally within you.

Each one of us has beautiful sprouts in us.

Each sprout, the spirit of your own culture won’t be same, but there’s no doubt that each one is beautiful.

Moreover, it will be more beautiful when each of us recognize and respect the each cultural spirits within us. Each one of us are beautiful because we have own special culture and beautiful within us.

As we learnt the word ‘아름답다(a-reum-dab-ta)’, I hope you can remind the beauty within us as the connotation in the word 아름답다(a-reum-dab-ta) when you use this word.

When people keep on speaking some words in a wrong way, it influences the others to also speak in that way.

So, it is better if we change and help them to speak in a right way.

Koreans often make the mistake with the word ‘너무(Nu moo)’. I noticed this from a friend in MANNAM Korean Class. You can hear people say,”너무 좋다(Very good).”, “너무 즐겁다(very).” But actually they are using ‘너무(Nu moo)’ Actually they are using the word much ‘너무(Nu moo)' by mistake)

‘너무’ is a word that means ‘very’ or ‘too’ that uses to describe ‘a lot of something.’ Similarly, the word ‘아주’,’매우’ has the same meaning. The use of these words is different in such situations. "The word ‘너무(Nu moo)’ is used when we say negative words behind.". ’ when we say negative words behind. Such as, ‘너무 힘들어요’, ‘너무 안 좋아요’. Opposite to this, we use ‘아주’ if a positive word follows it. Like, ‘아주 좋아요’, ‘아주 재미있어요.’ On the other hand, using ‘아주’ we can use it in both ways.

When I say a word or say something, words have the power to make a movement. If I say bad words or some words that are negative, I will become more negative. Even worse, it can make them feel bad too. Now we know how to say the word 'Very' property when we use it. ’Since we know it now, why don’t we speak good and helpful words around? Someone said life is too short although we only spend it to love each other. Furthermore, I think life is too short only just to be happy. life is too short not to be happy. The first step to be happy is to speak positive. What I love about MANNAM is that, everyone tries to make others happy, with their joy. Speak correctly and positively. That way, in MANNAM, we can call be a good influence to the whole world!

 One day, in middle school, a student comes in the teacher’s office and meets his teacher. The teacher who is in charge of the student gives advice about his problems. The student now knows what he should do, and thanks his teacher for having a conversation with him. When he leaves the office, “Keep up the hard work!” is what the student said. And the teacher got really mad.

 With the above story, do you realize what the student did wrong? Why did the teacher get mad?

Well, yes. It is about the students speaking that caused the problem. If we change this word into Korean, we say “수고하세요(Su-go-ha-sae-yo)”. So, what’s wrong about it? Korea is a country where they have words to respect the elders. In this case, “수고하세요(Su-go-ha-sae-yo)” is rude because the student spoke it when he was talking to the teacher.

Actually many Koreans make mistake with this word. Because many people don’t know that it’s rude to use it to the elders. People usually use this kind of word when they are leaving some place. Especially when they leave after spending some money they use these words. It was just a friendly way to say “goodbye” but the young misunderstood it and used it to follow the old.

Don’t use it when you get off the taxi! The 아저씨(Ajushi) will get mad at you. Or, if he is kind he will not even care about it. Why don’t we use “힘내세요!(Him-ne-sae-yo!-means Do your best!)” instead?

A friend in MANNAM Korean class asked about this matter before. He didn’t know that was rude or not. Every time he said that, the elders looked at him in a strange way. He was so pleased when he learned this. When you learn about a language or a culture, it maybe can be hard. But if you learn in MANNAM, we have many people from all around the world. That is how we can learn more and share more. This is a small but a big thing. If we can make people together with these kinds of reasons, peace will come.

When you were listening to Korean, have you ever experienced that there is something wrong in the sentence?

Which is like, you know this word means something, but it doesn't make sense with that meaning in that sentence.

Today, I will give you a solution to that weird situation.

The reason why you felt something wrong was there were other meaning.

In Korean, it is called 동음이의어(dong-eum-i-ui-eo).

동 means same, 음 means sound, 이 means different, 의 means meaning and 어 means word.

Altogether, it means a word that has same meaning but different meanings.

In a one word, because it sounds same but has many meanings, that is why people can confuse.

So, let's learn them so we can understand!

Today's idiom is '손을 잡다(son-eul jap-da) '.
손(son) is hand and 잡다(jap-da) means to grab.
However, 손을 잡다(son-eul jap-da) is not only about grabbing hands.
It has hidden meaning included in there. Which is 'To units minds and cooperate together'
Can you think of MANNAM logo? It looks like the Taegeuk pattern in Korean flag and there are two hands grabbing each other.
When we meet, most of countries shack hands as greeting.
Also in another situation, when contract has concluded, two representatives shack hands.
However, in this situation, shaking hands doesn't mean greeting.
It means from now on, let's cooperate and do well, right?
Same as this, when we grab others hands, it could be the meaning of greeting but also, it can be the hands gathering power.
When one person stands alone and tries to do something, it could be hard to achieve its goal.

- 설탕(seol-tang) : Sugar

- 소금(so-geum) : Salt

- 기름(gi-reum) : Oil

- 식용유(sik-yong-u) : Cooking oil

- 식초(sik-cho) : Vinegar

* 기름(gi-reum) is a oil, but usually it is not for cooking.

In this word, 식(sik) means to eat, 용(yong) means to use and 유(u) means oil.

So, altogether, it means oil used for eating:)

 

* 고추(go-cho) means pepper and there are two kinds of seasoning that is made of pepper.

One is 고추장(go-ghu-jang) that goes on Bibimbab, and the other is a 고춧가루(go-gut-ga-ru) that is in Kimchi.

What did you do on 5th of April?

Many of you might have spent normal day like it used to be.

However, it was a tree planting day!

In Korea, April 5th was used to be a red day, so that people can go planting trees.

Before we talk about this, do you know why the Korean gorvernment chose April 5th as a tree planting day?

  

During the domination, lots of trees in Korea were taken because it was a good resources. So, after the domination, Korea was lack of trees.

This is why Korean government decided to plant trees on a one special day.

So, on this day, many families went to nearest mountian and plant trees.

However, the government thought there were too many red days in Korea, so they changed tree planting day as a normal black day.

Although it changed to normal weekdays, people still go plant trees on that weekend.

So as MANNNAM Internatioal volunteer members too.

We also went to plant trees and saved environment.

     

When we think about benefits that we got from environment, we cannot pay them back as much as they gave us.

But, least, don't we have to think about them and share our love?

Because we live together in this world we should care about each other.

This is what I think.

As much as we use them we should plant more trees so that next generation can also live in the fresh air.

It takes 20s, 50s and also 100s of years for trees to grow.

Planting tree can be same as making your own friend who can be there, alway waiting for you.

These are the famous trees and flowers in Korea.
소나무(so-na-mu) is famous because it is always green.
Because people want to have original intentions, they mention about this tree and live like this.
개나리(gae-na-ri) is well known as yellow flower. It is special because flower blossom first and then a sprout comes out.
진달래(jin-dal-rae) is well known as pink flower. Long time ago, Koreans used to suck honey in this flower.

Hey guys~ its April fool’s day!

Did you do any tricks on others or any lies?

I did to my friends and we had lots of fun :)

I sent fake present on online and they believed it was real.

Even there are lots of countries celebrating April fool’s Day, the way and culture of celebrating is different.

In Korea, especially in schools, we used to do many tricks on teachers.

For example, we changed all of our chairs and desks facing back of the class so that teacher came in and thought he/she went into wrong door.

Also, two classes’ students changed the classroom and made teacher confuse the classroom.

Moreover, only few of the students, like five of them in the class, snick into other classroom and pretend like he/she was used to be there.

Last, student made fake another classmate with their clothes.

Even though teachers know that it is a fake, we spend happy time on 1^st day of April.

This is the memory that I have when I was in school.

How do you guys celebrate April fool’s day?

It would be more fun if we share various culture of celebrating fools day.

But, even it is an April fool’s Day, don’t go so far.

Everything and everyone is happy when it is ENOUGH.

You know this, right?

On different perspective, someone can be rude to you, but understand them and be generous. Because it’s April fool’s Day!

Learning Korean proverb time is back!!

Today’s proverb is ‘콩 심은 데 콩 나고 팥 심은 데 팥 난다(cong sim-eun dae cong na-go pat sim-eun dae pat nan-da)’. It is similar to English proverb  ‘An onion will not produce a rose or As one sows, so shall he reap’.

It means all brings certain results along its root.

It is an easy proverb that you don’t really have to think.

It is a natural situation to get what you plant.

No one expects something different than what they have plant.

It is an impossible thing except in the fairy tale.

However, when people face situation like this proverb, some people don’t understand it.

When people claim only their own opinion, they can’t negotiate, and it will cause argue.

On the contrary, when people try to understand each other and care others, it will make peace.

This is a situation of is ‘콩 심은 데 콩 나고 팥 심은 데 팥 난다(cong sim-eun dae cong na-go pat sim-eun dae pat nan-da)’.

We cannot expect peace being selfish. That is a greed.

If people really want peace in the world, we should work for it so that we can achieve world peace.

-(으)세요 is a command/imperative form; a polite way to tell someone to do something.
