[MANNAM] MANNAM friends! Korean 열공하삼!

[MANNAM] MANNAM friends! Korean 열공하삼!

New words have appeared since technology developed recently. In the modern society, time and speed is the key for success. People communicate with texts and messages, so words transformed into a short way. To send messages as short as they can, but it has to have all the meaning what the sender wants, words had to change also. This happens not only in Korean but also in English and with other languages. But lets check about Korean shorten words.
1. 열공하다 = 심히 하다
(공부하다 study 열심히 hard)

2. 즐감하삼 = 겁게 감상하세요
(~ is a slang of saying ~하세요 감상하다 admire 즐겁게 joyful)

3. 안물 = 안 물어봤어요
( didn물어보다 ask something)

4. 빨리 = 82(팔이: It has the similar pronunciation)

5. 안습 = 구에 기 차다
(안구 = 눈알 eye ball, 습기 humid, 차다 filled with)

6. 흠좀무 = ..이게 사실이라면 좀 무섭겠군요?
( hum  little, a bit 무섭다 scary, Hum.. If this is true it is a bit scary)

7. 지못미 = 지켜주지 못해서 미안해
(지키다 protect  can미안하다 sorry, Sorry I couldnt protect you)

8. 완소 = 완전 소중하다
(완전 very, much 소중하다 precious)

9. 볼매 = 볼수록 매력 있다
(보다 see 매력 있다 have attraction The more I see you the more you attract me)

10. 불금 = 불타는 금요일
( fire 금요일 Friday, Burning(Hot) Friday)

If we use shorten words, maybe we can understand the words that people say recently, but it is the start of transforming our beautiful language into an unknown form. Dont you want to 열공 in MANNAM? Still there are many words that are made by people still now as we speak. Learn the words and the origins correctly. Be a friend who can make jokes with Korean friends. That will be 완소 & 볼매 friend! It is possible in MANNAM Korean class!

MANNAM: Where are you going? Did you eat?

MANNAM: Where are you going? Did you eat?

On the street, if you meet your friend or people you know, Korean usually say "Where are you going?" or "Did you eat lunch?" I heard from a friend that a Korean spoke this way to a foreigner, and the respond was "Hey! It's not your business. Why do you ask?" And the Korean was very surprised. I mean, they both were.

Korean says these words to greet people they know. To speak frankly, they don’t care and don’t mind if you really ate lunch or not. Also the place where you go is not a matter to them. They just ask you this because this is their way of saying hello.

Then, let’s find out where and when this saying began. This saying comes from Korean history. When Korea had war in 1950’s many people died. They died because of weapons and bombs but also by starvation. They didn’t have enough food for the people to eat. Since thousands of people died because the lack of food, eating was a big issue in the daily schedule. So “Did you eat food?” became an expression for caring each other. It was an important matter because it depends on life and death.

What about ‘where are you going?‘? In the old times of Korea, we had many mountains and hills so, if we want to move and do something, I was a big thing for the people. Naturally if someone meets a person who he knows on the road, that became a saying for care and interest. Also when we use this word, we can continue the conversation.

If your friend says this, we can of course answer to what they ask. Or just answer, ”Near here to do something.” They won’t ask until you answer it. Koreans mind what you do, where you go and about what you eat. It is the way to express that they care for you. They don’t want to bug you or make you feel bad.

Now do you understand why people say this? If we explain about our acts, we can understand each other. No one is right or wrong. Everyone is right and must be respected. Although these saying are from sad history, we can remember the past and try not to happen again. MANNAM is a place where we respect and understand your culture and language. In MANNAM Korean class you can learn about not only words or just language, love and peace. Plus! History! Think if we didn’t have war in the past, we might have not used these words. Or maybe it could have been another word. We can’t change the past, but we can change and make the future! Join MANNAM!

Expressions needed in MANNAM International Korean class-for students

Expressions needed in MANNAM International Korean class-for students

Lesson for class expression is back!
As we learned about expressions that teacher will say in the class, today, lets talk about students expressions.
In the class, even students ask questions in English, teachers understand and answer back.
In reality, there is no problem.
However, because its Korean class and students are here to learn Korean, isnt it fair to speak Korean in the korean class?
Its not about the reality but I think its about mind set of learning Korean.
As I volunteer in the MANNAM Korean class, I see two different students.
One is whom knows Korean a lot, but they study Korean as a knowledge. The other is they dont know much about Korean, but they study hard with their body.
Whats the difference between these two different group?
After time goes by, the group who learns Korean with their body speaks better than the other.
I am not talking about the way of studying Korean, but I am talking about their mind set.
Even though they dont know a lot of Korean, they try to use the words that they know.
This way, they can remember with their own body.
On the contrary, the other, even though they know lots of Korean, but really dont try to practice out loud, it will stay as a knowledge in the brain.
It means, whenever the situation to use Korean comes, because its unfamiliar to say in Korean, its hard to speak in that situation.
I think most of you have experience of these kinds of things.
In the school where you teach or where you are learning.
As a result, the main reason for saying this is to ask question with Korean in the class.
Start from basic thing will help you to build nice strong knowledge building on the top.
Here are expressions that students need in the class.
If you use these in the class, teacher will be happy that you are trying your best in the class.
so, lets see what we got.

Hope to see every MANNAM International member with smile in the morning

Hope to see every MANNAM International member with smile in the morning

Good night and good morning.
안녕히 주무세요, 안녕히 주무셨어요? Or 좋은 아침이에요
We use these words to say hello. We don’t think about meanings a lot.
However, to some people, hearing these words are very valuable.
To people who are in the war, no one knows if they will be still alive in the next morning.
No one knows if they can spend night safely.
For us, we don’t really think about that seriously.
When we go to bed, we relax and let things flow.
Even though we are living in the same planet, the Earth, why are we different?
Did they do something wrong? War causes just because of a few people.
However, people who are innocent get all the damages.
That’s not fair. Think if it was you and your family.
Will you stay still? No, you will do something to save your precious people and to survive.
Let’s not hear those sad stories from now on.
Let’s make change in this world and hear ‘Good night’ and ‘Good morning’ from everyone.

MANNAM Internationals is round and warm??

MANNAM Internationals is round and warm??

What do you think MANNAM is round and warm means?
How can be an association round and warm? It doesnt make sense.
However, the words round and warm in this sentence dont mean a shape nor a temperature.
They represent the association’s character. Does it sounds still werid? Then see how it works.

We usually use the word Round when something is circular in shape.
It has no edge and it is formed with curves.
When the object has edges, we should be careful for the sharp vertex.
Same as this character, when a person is 둥글다(dung-geul-da), it means the person is  easygoing and fit in well with others.
On the other, if a person is 모나다(mo-na-da), it means he or she is a difficult person.
Whenever the person gets along with others, the corner bumps with others and it cause hard to go well with them.
Then, how about 따뜻하다(tta-tteut-ha-da) ?
Does this mean a person who has warm hands? No.
As you know, it means warm-hearted person. When you get along with warm-hearted person, you can also feel the warm heart.
Last, 차갑다 means? Yes. A person who is curt or unfriendly.
Like this Korean uses to make an insinuation to shapes or adjectives related to temperature.

So, now, do you understand todays title? How do you think about that? Do you agree?
I do. MANNAM does volunteer works with no discrimination nor gender, nationality, religion differences.
We share love, culture and peace to the world. Arent these members have warm-heart? Isnt this warm-hearted work? MANNAM is an association where 따뜻한 사람들 are gathered.
In addition, because MANNAM International has many members who are from many different countries, we get along together and rub our sharp corners. That is why MANNAM members are 둥글다(dung-geul-da).
How about you? Are you 따뜻하다? 차갑다? 둥글다? 모나다? Join us and lets heat up the world!
