MANNAM Korean Class – Numbers (Lesson 1)

MANNAM Korean Class Numbers (Lesson 1)

Lets talk about Korean numbers.
Many foreigners have hard time learning Korean numbers.
Why? English has only one way to count number.
However, Koreans use two ways to count numbers.
It is because Korea have influenced from China.
So we use both Chinese number which is sino numbers and Korean number.
The real problem is when two kinds of numbers are used in different situation.
Firstly, Sino numbers are mostly used in money. Secondly, Korean numbers are used in counting.
For example, when you have 5,000won, we say 오천원(o-chon-won), not 다섯 천원(da-seut chon-won).
On the contrary, when you count people in your class, you will say 다섯명(da-seut-meong) instead of 오명(o-meong).
(‘is count unit for money and ‘is count unit for person and people.)
This is one example that people use a lot.
For more information about Korean numbers, I will make another lesson for next time.
It will be easier to memorize it before you learn about those rules.
